On Monday 18th September, a group of Year 13 students were invited to the Royal Institution for a Youth Summit on Artificial Intelligence. We started our day off by listening to a panel of experts from different domains of AI including Professor Mike Wooldridge from Oxford University who is presenting this year’s Royal Institution’s Christmas Lectures, to be broadcast on BBC4. We were shown presentations about many different aspects, such as the ethical and philosophical side of AI. We were also shown a demonstration of the use of AI in devices such as mobile phones and smart watches (which Bezawit volunteered for). After lunch we were involved in small debates related to AI. Our students made excellent points and even volunteered to give feedback after the group discussions to the audience in the lecture theatre. Overall, we all left having learned something new. I learned that the use of AI will be relevant to any student (even students studying non-STEM subjects). I recommend taking part in future Youth Summits to anyone who is interested!
